All Alpha Search and Recovery members are certified to minimum team standards prior to be coming mission deployable. The standards held by Alpha SAR meet or exceed the NIMS and FEMA typing for wilderness search and rescue teams, with individuals meeting the training requirements for types I-IV. All fully operation members also must maintain a SARTECH II from the National Association of Search and Rescue (NASAR). With 3 NASAR instructors and evaluators, the team brings in various classes and certifications throughout the year. Check our calendar for upcoming events. Many of our members are canine handlers, but not all. We have quite a few ground searchers, UAV specialists, flankers, and other support staff. All canine handlers do act as ground searchers or flankers for other canines when they are not running their own canines.
Alpha Search and Recovery's canines are also fully certified prior to being deployable on a search. Each canine earns a certification to a national organization of the handler's choosing with a preference of organizations that adhere to NIMS and FEMA typing for canine training or to police work dog associations. Most dogs specialize in one discipline, but a few are cross-trained in various disciplines. The choice of discipline is up to the handler and the dog's strengths, but most handlers choose based on our most common call outs which are human remains detection or urban live searches (trailing).
